Embedded systems are fundamental to the electronic and information industries; they form the core of intelligent systems. We have seen rapid development of embedded AI and the rise of ChatGPT; embedded Operating Systems play a critical role in intelligent systems. In today’s world of uncertainty, embedded intelligent systems made in China have to rely on domestic heterogeneous multi-core intelligent chips and software that are capable of real-time high-performance computing. Moreover, the industrial intelligent system is a major source of demand for mixed-criticality systems.
Linux accounts for 70% of the embedded designs, but it cannot support all requirements, such as real-time, high dependability, and high security. Real-time OS is the obvious choice. With the advancement of microelectronic technology, embedded processors are becoming increasingly powerful. SoC processors have advanced from single-core to multi-core and even many-core. Technologies such as virtualization, container, and trusted execution in OS are leading us toward deploying multiple OSes on a single SoC. In the future use cases of intelligent applications where humans, machines, and things interconnect, multi-OS deployment can lead the way in system isolation, real-time, dependability, and extensibility. However, multi-OS mixed deployment is still in its early days when it comes to practical research. There is significant room for improvement in usability and software ecosystem. Deep research into embedded system multi=OS mixed deployment can spark innovations and breakthroughs, which in turn satisfy the pressing demand from typical applications of embedded systems.
Mixed-criticality system is one of the important aspects of the future development of embedded system technology. It has seen some applications in areas like autonomous driving, service robots, and automotive electronics. Mixed-criticality system is also growing in the defense sector.
The topic of the forum will be “Mixed-Criticality System for Heterogeneous Multi-Core Intelligent Chips: Research and Application”. The morning’s topic will be “The development of the embedded heterogeneous multi-core intelligent chip industry”, while the afternoon’s topic will be “Mixed criticality OS technology and application”. The event will consist of host expert presentations, panel discussions, and a poster session about embedded OS, heterogeneous multi-core intelligent chips, as well as the embedded software ecosystem.
We have invited experts in embedded OS, software technology, and intelligent silicon from China and abroad to speak and attend the panel discussions. Scholars from East China Normal University, Hunan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Fudan University, and Beihang University, as well as enterprise experts from Canaan Creative, StarFive Technology, Huawei, and RT-Thread Technology have confirmed their attendance (with more coming).
